Format Research- music magazine 1

Audience: The target audience conveyed in this magazine is for teenagers/ young adults. It could also be aimed at people who enjoy gothic music that is presented on the front cover. This is shown through the use of colours. The use of dark colours like black and purple represent a gothic theme and this is linked to the kind of music that the band on the front cover may play. The use of informal text font on the front cover shows that it is aimed at teenagers as the font attracts the reader and draws them in more by the interesting shapes of the letters in the text.

Masthead: The masthead presented on the front cover isn't very noticeable and the main image covers part of it. The use of partially covered masthead shows that the magazine knows its readership. For the magazine to know it's readership, this means that people notice the magazine often and shows that the magazine is quite famous and very well selling as they don't need to show the whole masthead. The masthead being covered alienates a readership and immediately excludes people who do not enjoy the type of music being conveyed as they cover the masthead. This alienates other readers as because Kerrang are such a huge magazine company, their buyers immediately know which magazine they are buying, so buy covering the masthead this alienates other readers as they may not know the magazine particularly well and with the masthead being covered, this means that they are not likely to buy the magazine more because it isn't clear. The use of white writing used for the masthead helps it to stand out more against the dark and gothic colours used. The gothic colours used in the background of the masthead, link to the genre of music conveyed in the magazine and although the use of white writing just helps for the headline to stand out, the colour doesn’t link with the genre.

Main image: The use of Black Sabbath featuring and being main image on the front cover of the magazine reflect that inside the magazine they will be an article about them. The large image and the large text saying, Black Sabbath' shows this and shows that they headline the magazine. The mode of address on the front cover is direct as they are all facing the audience at which ever angle you look at the front cover from. Just from looking at the image you can see that Ozzy Osborne is most important and leader of the band. The larger image of Ozzy Osborne and him being placed further forward in the image shows that he is higher up in the hierarchy and more important in the music industry. It shows that he is the main singer and the guys in the background are part of the band, as they are put towards the back and seen as less important. This is reflected with artists performing on stage as well, as usually you have the band at the back of the stage and the singer at the front of the stage. This shows in importancy in the players of the band. The colours of black that they are wearing also represents what the genre of the magazine is as it sticks to the house style of dark colours giving off a gothic look to the audience and alienating other audiences that do not enjoy gothic music or like gothic colours. People who do not like gothic colours or dark colours are not likely to buy the magazine.

Text: On the front cover of Kerrang magazine there is very little writing with big sub headlines and lots of puffs/stickers and a few smaller pictures. The biggest text on the page is the one introducing Black Sabbath. Black Sabbath being larger text than the other text, shows that they are going to be headlining and there will be at least a double page spread inside the magazine about them. The large writing shows importance and gives it dramatic effect, featuring the band itself. Sticking to the colour themes and house style of the magazine, the use of dark colours used for

Branding: The branding of Kerrang magazine on this issue is in white writing with lines going through the lettering. If you look at the other issues of Kerrang magazine although the lettering may be presented in a different colour, the brand of kerrang is always in bold, capital letters and therefore noticeable for other readers and stands out well. This brand is effective in its target audience and music genre industry as readers of the magazine immediately know the brand from the bold capital letters and the lines running diagonally through the letters. As well as the letters being bold and the lines running through the letters, in most magazines the main image covers part of the masthead and it is partially visible for readers. The magazine doing this creates a sense that the 'Kerrang business' feels that the business is so big that it doesn't all need to be seen by readers and it is already a massive part of the industry immediately attracting readers interested in the gothic kind of genre of music.

Strapline and footer:The strapline used on the Kerrang magazine is placed in the normal position at the top of the page above the masthead. There is also a footer on the page at the very bottom of the front cover. The strapline and the footer, although contain different information, link together as they have the same colour house style. The filled backgrounds of the footer and strapline are bright yellow, making them stand out immediately and noticeable to anyone. The text laid on top of the yellow background is in red and black, capital, bold writing. The use of red and black links with the text mentioning ‘bloody’ and the black writing sticks to the colour scheme of being dark colours keeping it to the gothic style. Both the strapline and the footer give information about information included in the magazine.

Left third:The left third of the magazine as briefly mentioned before contains brief information about posters inside the magazine. It includes 5 smaller images representing the posters inside. Underneath the poster information there is another image with overlapping text in white capital letters with a red background saying ‘Paramore’. The overlapping of the images over the main image is effective as it shows the reader more interesting things inside the magazine, and if the posters appeal to them, they are more likely to buy the magazine just for the posters. Likewise if they are Paramore fans then they are more likely to buy the magazine to read about Paramore. The overlap of images also shows that the man standing in the background isn’t as important in the band as the man standing further forward as he is covered by images and text as well as being placed further back in the image. This represents hierarchy once again and importance of players in the band. The constant use of the colour red with the white overlap, gives off a gory, bloody effect and could connotate to violence. The violent effect links with the target audience and style of music.

Barcode:The barcode on Kerrang magazine is placed vertically at the bottom of the page next to the information about Paramore. It is placed just above the footer of the page. This defies the norms of a typical magazine because usually barcodes are placed horizontally so that readers can read the barcode. With this magazine it defies the norms of a typical magazine and places the barcode vertically on the page. This gives it originality.
