Format research 2- music magazine

Audience:
The audience conveyed from the front cover of this magazine is towards adults/ older people or people who enjoy classical and slower, relaxing and calming music. The use of a serif font used for the masthead reveals the target audience by giving off an elegant view and relaxed atmosphere for the reader as the front cover is quite plain and not jam packed with information, text and pictures. The large image also helps to show the target audience of the magazine as the woman is very relaxed in the large image just showing her holding a violin. The violin gives off the type of music conveyed for the magazine; being classical, and also shows that the music/ magazine is written for adults who enjoy slow relaxing music, just like the violin can be played. The featuring of branding of BBC news also shows the target as children/ teenagers do not typically read the news or keep up with the BBC, whereas adults or older adults such as seniors would keep up to date with what happens in the news and specifically in the BBC.

Main Image:
The image is of a young woman holding a violin. As a reader you assume that she is a famous classical music player and within the industry of the genre being presented for the magazine.
The image of the young woman on the front cover of the magazine helps to reveal the target audience of classical music lovers as she is holding a violin, implying that she plays the violin. Violins connotate to classical, slow music being played and are often thought of as in a classical band played in a big hall. The woman of ‘Sarah Chang’ being on the front cover shows that she is a massive name/ artist in the classical music industry and is well known. This immediately alienates other readers or other audiences looking at the magazine considering buying it, as if the reader is unaware of who the magazine is featuring, they are unlikely to buy the magazine and read on. As classical music isn’t very popular in the modern day, only the buyers of the magazine and classical music lovers would really know who the artist is as this is the genre of music that they listen to.
Sarah Chang is standing very relaxed and holding her violin in the image. The image is effective for the magazine and target audience as the image reflects with the genre of music conveyed. The woman stands in the image very relaxed and gives off a clam atmosphere. This links with the genre of music as classical music gives off a clam atmosphere and it is very soothing. Also the use of only one large image and not lots of small images around the large image is effective as once again it links with the genre of music. The front cover not being jam packed reflects with the type of music showing space on the music and giving a soothing, calm atmosphere for the reader. The use of direct mode of address of the woman  used on the front page directs the magazine straight at the reader and drawing them in immediately. This makes the reader feel as though they are part of the classical industry and with the woman looking directly at the audience it makes the reader want to read on about 'Sarah Chang' and what she does.

Masthead:
The masthead presented on this magazine is placed at the top of the page with a white background and red lettering. The lettering is in lower case letters and the font being in italics makes the magazine seem more elegant and graceful linking to the genre of music featured in the magazine. The use of serif text in the masthead makes the writing look similar to music notes or the treble clef placed at the front of a score of music. This helps to get across its target audience by revealing the genre of music in the masthead which stands out immediately to the audience. The use of italics and use of darker red for the house colour gives off a formal and professional look.
The masthead being partially covered by ‘Sarah Chang’s’ head gives off in formation about the popularity of the target audience and alienates other audiences completely. The masthead being covered shows that buyers of this magazine do not need to read the entire masthead as they know which magazine they are buying due to the constant and repetitive use of the masthead on each issue. These alienates other audiences as people who may not read this magazine, due to different interests in music or age group, will not know the magazine very well and therefore not know the masthead of the magazine. The mast head being partially covered means that other audiences who do not usually buy this magazine are even less likely to buy the magazine as they do not recognise the magazine and so less likely to buy it if it doesn’t appeal to them, especially if they cannot read the masthead very well.

Text:
The magazine features quite a lot of text on the front cover of the magazine in bold, black writing, contrasting with the white background and standing out immediately to the reader. The text about the main image is written in bigger, bolder, red writing making it more obvious to the reader that the story written about links to the main image. It is in bigger writing making it clearer and standing out more as it is the main story of the magazine. Some of the text is bigger than other parts of text on the front page. The bigger bits of text are almost like the headlines of each story inside the magazine and the smaller pieces of text go into more detail underneath the big headings about each story.
The use of lots of writing reflects in the target audience of being adults, older people and classical music lovers. The reason is reflects with adults is because when adults read magazines they are more likely to read all of the headlines on the front page and will be more interested in the text on the front of the magazine, unlike children. It links with classical music lovers as all the headlines are about classical music and what is going on at the moment with classical music in the industry.
The text is very well laid out on either side of the main image and it is clearly read for the audience. The text is basic and simple so that there isn’t too much to read on the front of the magazine and it takes up little space allowing room for space and pictures on the page, giving off a clam and relaxing feel reflecting with the feel you get when listening to classical music.

Logo:
On this magazine of 'Music' there is always a logo placed at the top of the page above the masthead alsmost within its own strapline. The use of logo is effective on this magazine as it relates its magzine to a very famous logo giving off more readers as more people have heard of the BBC that the actual magazine in itself. The BBC are also very famous for classical music and advertising classical music. Using BBC as a logo on the front page of the magazine helps to present the target audience of classical music lovers as BBC are associated with classical music.

Branding:
Looking at other ‘Music’ magazines of the same brand you can see that all the magazines include the masthead/brand being in white font but with the same serif, elegant text font. This could be due to the main image on the front page of the magazine I analysed as the background of ‘Sarah Chang’ was white and this made the image stand out more giving her more elegance. In the other magazines the background is black or a darker colour meaning that the white text stood out more for the reader to see clearly. In the magazine that I analysed the use of red for the branding was effective as it made it stand out for the reader to clearly see. The branding company alter the colour of their brand due to the background of the rest of the magazine and so the brand is not always consistent for each magazine.
On each issue of the ‘music’ magazine a flasher/ puff is featured at the end of the branding name on the front page. This could be part of their brand attracting readers as most of them advertise free things that they are giving away or things that they are going to win.

Barcode:

The barcode on ‘Music’ magazine is placed at the bottom of the page. It is in the right hand corner below some smaller images of information about classical music inside the magazine. The magazine has aspects of the typical magazine as the barcode is placed at the bottom of the page out of the way of the text, main images and masthead. The barcode is slightly larger than a normal barcode, however this is effective as the magazine isn’t packed with information and there is a lot of space for other information such as the barcode.
